Interview with Ms. Louis
We all know the head Librarian Murielle Louis one of the most popular teachers. But did you know that Ms. Louis works with media Literatur 5 and Independent research 9 and 10? I bet not. So today we are going to learn more about Murielle Louis and her interest. Murielle Louis was born in Brooklyn. Ms. Louis was interviewed about her role in the library, her 5th grade Media Literacy class, about the meaning of Haitian independence for her, and anything fun we wanted to know: favorite movie, book, hobbies, etc. Thank you, Ms. Louis!
What is your full name? Murielle Louis
Where are you from? Born in Brooklyn New York. I lived in Haiti with grandmother for 8 years and currently live in Queens, New York.
What do you do? Head Librarian. I make sure that the library is welcoming and inviting environment for the community. I teach Independent Research to grades 9 and 10. In Media Literacy to 5th graders, I teach each them skills to critically examine and understand different forms of media.
What inspires you? To see the students- how we grow and develop.
What does Haitian independence mean to you? Haiti was the first black country that gained its independence in 1804 from France.
What is your favorite book? How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez. I relate to it because the characters’ parents were immigrants from the Dominican Republic and they were learning how to balance two worlds. The lesson is the thing that makes you different is what makes you who you are and you should embrace it.
Favorite movies? Au Revoir Les Enfants and Purple Rain
What else to know? Ms. Louis believes firmly in being kind and treating others with respect which are words of wisdom passed down to her. Ms. Louis lives in Queens! She has 1 brother (youngest) 1 sister( oldest). She has a 13 year old son. This is her 4th year at Browning!
Interview with Mr. Semela
Mr. Semela was interviewed on his role in the school, what equity means for him, and other fun facts about him like his favorite books and hobbies, (I heard he’s a huge Star Wars fan!)
Full name? Naledi Sean Semela
Age? 33
Where do you live? Upper West Side manhattan
Where were you born? Moved around. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Lived in Baltimore, Maryland for 5 years, and moved to Queens at 10.
What do you do at Browning? Director of Equitable Impact and Social Practices. Make sure people feel safe with identity. I have been at Browning for 7 months. This is my tenth year as a teacher. I have taught at Spence, was awarded a TEAK Fellowship, and was at Prep for Prep.
What inspired you to be at Browning? The fact that Browning is based on relationships and getting to know people.
A word of wisdom? His word of wisdom is Ubuntu- I am because we are, which means that everyone is important and to understand who they are and to be your full self.
Any siblings? I have a brother who is 6 years younger.
Sports and hobbies? Loves basketball, guitar, and writing.
Favorite book? To Kill a Mockingbird because it taught about dignity and empathy and is ahead of its time. The book predicted the future. It talked about things that we would talk about this year.
Favorite Star Wars movie? The Empire Strikes Back because as I learned more about my family, I learned about destiny. I like Black Panther for similar reasons.
