Study Smarter, Stress Lesser: The Homework Hack Series - Part 2
A lot of people don’t like homework, and the studies show that. At Browning around 43.1% of people don’t like homework, I’m Joseph Cannariato Let's get into this. Ever feel super tired, forget what you’re talking about, have a headache and have stomach issues? According to Harvard health, this is because of bad sleep! Did you know that at Browning most students say that they get a normal amount of sleep, but I don’t know if this was a joke or not (response) some students said that they got 2-2:30— hours of sleep. If so, please talk to your parents, teachers, and also your doctor to find a solution. The reason I say teachers is because most students said that their cause of not getting much sleep is either homework or some kind of screen related activity. But, I think that having a bunch of groggy students in your class will not help them pay attention, this certainly won’t raise test scores, and also this will just make students more stressed and worsen their overall mental health.
The most common reason for procrastination (homework related) is homework, in fact one student said “The fact that there is a lot of work to do is daunting” - anonymous. As students we feel overwhelmed and I personally have experienced this issue myself, there is just so much work to do that you just don’t do it. Did you know that 20.7% of students find that ½ of their homework time is procrastination! The cause, boring homework. That’s it! We need to make homework engaging, exciting, so that students get their homework done quicker, get more sleep, and are happier overall. Most people said that a new addition to the Browning curriculum was most useful for them, Cornell notes! 20.7% of students found that they are the most useful homework. One student said “School at school, home at home.” - anonymous. This shows that if we had around 1 hour of homework (for study hall) we would be so productive at home, be able to accomplish extracurriculars to increase our chances for getting into college, play more sports, and so much more. The least useful homework is a split between textbook, video resource, and handout. The class that gives the most homework is… English! Overall I am not saying that we should completely remove homework, what this data shows is that we should lessen it and show students how to do it, how to study properly, and also how to time manage, if we limit the amount of time for 6th grade to around 1 hour, than 7th 2 hours and so on, people would be very happy if this happened.
