New Middle School Teachers by Andrew Berti

New Middle School Teachers

By Andrew Berti

I am excited to be back in school and see old and new teachers so I thought that it would be a good idea to write an article to introduce the new Browning Middle School faculty. These are the new Browning Middle School faculty members. In addition, Andrew Berti asked these new faculty members a few questions.

Ms. Barton is the new Middle and Upper School Counselor.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

My favorite ice cream flavor is Chunky Monkey from Ben & Jerry's!

2. What was your favorite subject in middle school? Did that inspire you to become a teacher?

I loved English in middle school-it's when I began to really love writing, both poetry and prose.

3. What is your favorite Browning experience so far?

I've appreciated watching students run their own assemblies and take that big responsibility on all on their own! I've loved watching Browning boys from ages K-12 greet each other, give each other a pound and wish each a good day in the hallways! So cool to see the whole spectrum of school experience under one roof!

Ms. Olanoff is the new Middle School Learning Specialist.

1. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

My favorite ice cream flavor is coffee.

2. What was your favorite subject in middle school?

My favorite subject in middle school was science. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher (when I was little, I liked to play school and pretend to teach my toys and stuffed animals), but my science teachers inspired me to become a science teacher, specifically. I taught science for many years before Browning.

3. What was your favorite Browning experience so far?

My favorite Browning experience so far was the school-wide assembly on the first day. I got to see the whole Browning community come together, including the Panther!

Ms. Oro-Hahn is a new Middle School Spanish teacher.

1. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

My favorite ice cream flavor is Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter World.

2. What was your favorite subject in middle school?

I loved art, music and science.

Did that inspire you to become a teacher?

I think middle school is a fantastic time of life for young learners. I love the moment when students realize they can read, understand and discuss what they read in Spanish. I love to create inviting spaces where students can play with language, take risks and grow their ability and cultural understanding.

3. What is your favorite Browning experience so far?

My favorite experience is when a class becomes a community and we gain not just skill but connection.  I see it when a student takes a risk and the class responds with celebration then the learning is filled with joy. That is a great day!

Ms. Smith is the Equitable Practices and Social Impact (EPSI) Associate at the Browning School.

  1. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

My favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate cookie dough.

  1. What was your favorite subject in middle school? Did that inspire you to become a teacher?

My favorite subject was/is math. It did not inspire me to become a teacher. No, I became an English teacher later in life after coaching gymnastics for 20+ years.

  1. What is your favorite Browning experience so far?

My favorite Browning experience so far are the mornings when the Kindergarteners come into my office and play with my toys before heading to their classrooms.
