The Needs of our Monthly Panther readers

Hi, we are the head writers of your Student Life section of the Monthly Panther. Usually, we will open our column with multiple responses to the students' concerns and needs, to do that we have to hear some more from you! This week, a student featured the topic of having chocolate milk as a drink option at school. I came from a school that served chocolate milk daily, so I have heard this argument before when it was almost taken away at my old school, P.S. 40. There are pros and cons to both, but the fact that chocolate milk does contain a lot of sugar is the main reason why it is not served at Browning’s dining hall at all. Famous activists such as Jamie Oliver of Food Revolution demanded against chocolate milk. This certain activist pulled off a horrendous stunt, as it showed 57 tons of sand being dumped into a school bus. This represented how much sugar kids consumed from chocolate milk alone in one week. That is why it may be very hard to manage to receive it every day, but we could see if it was possible to add it as a once in a while treat, which I hope would be a fulfilling upgrade. Ms.Ryan, our Dean of Middle School Life says that “ I can support the idea that while milk on its own has some positive qualities on it’s own, such as calcium, phosphorus, B vitamins, potassium and vitamin D, but when you add chocolate it removes those important health qualities, and makes it more like a candy bar, which is not a healthy drink for our students to drink with classes following their lunch period”. I would like to let you all know that we take your suggestions seriously and try our best to make them happen. I would like to thank the person who suggested this and I hope to hear from the rest of you. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email liamgreco@browning.edu, ntwumasi@browning.edu and aberti@browning.edu.
