Book Review: Wink
In the novel Wink, by Rob Harrell, Ross Malaroy is diagnosed with a rare type of eye cancer. He is a seventh-grade boy who is now called the “weird kid”. He faces potential blindness while he deals with a permanently closed eye as a wink. His cancer is mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal gland. He has goopy eye glue to help with his pain and he has to wear a hat at all times to protect his eye with ongoing treatment. He is suddenly ghosted by one of his best friends and a series of hateful memes about him going on within the school. He finds ways to cope with his treatment through music and drawing batpigs. He is inspired to play the guitar and have some fun. I highly recommend this book if you are in middle school or high school. I would recommend this book.
