Turkey Earthquake
On Monday, about two weeks ago, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake occurred near the city of Antakya, which is located near the Syrian border. This area was previously devastated by massive quakes on the 6th February, which resulted in the deaths of 44,000 people in Turkey and Syria and left tens of thousands of people homeless. As a result of the earlier tremors, buildings weakened and collapsed in both countries on Monday. Turkey's disaster and emergency agency reported that the recent earthquake happened at 20:04 local time at a depth of 10km, followed by a 5.8 aftershock three minutes later, as well as dozens of subsequent aftershocks that were less severe. The health minister, Dr Fahrettin Koca, revealed that 294 people have been injured, with 18 of them in a serious condition. The death toll has been relatively low this time, thought to be due to the earthquake striking an area that was largely empty after being badly hit by the previous quake. According to reports from Antakya, people in the streets were in fear and panic as ambulances and rescue crews rushed to reach the worst affected areas, where the walls of badly damaged buildings had collapsed.
